Mission life: THE KUKMIN DAILY

“Let us pray for one minute at noon every day for peace on the Korean peninsula”

Prayers appealing for the success of the April 27 South-North summit are spreading in the Korean churches. On April 19, the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK, general secretary: Rev. Lee Hong-jung) held a joint prayer gathering for peace on the Korean peninsula (photo) at Youndong Presbyterian Church (Rev. Lee Seong-hui) in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and distributed prayer cards to the 400 participating pastors. The prayer card, to be used at noon every day up until the time of the South-North summit and the North Korea-U.S. summit, reads:

“O Lord, have pity on us
And grant us peace.

Lord, help us to be brave
And guide us in carrying out your will.

Through the South-North summit
Guide us to establish peace in this land
And to activate civilian-level exchanges between South and North.

O Lord, through the South-North summit
Grant that the way may be opened
To an age of reconciliation, peace, and coexistence in this land.

O Lord, through peace on the Korean peninsula
Help us to bring about world peace.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.”

Next month, together with the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC), NCCK plans to visit the North Korean Christian Federation (KCF). On that occasion the churches will reconfirm the spirit of the “Declaration of the Churches of Korea on National Reunification and Peace” (88 Declaration), the first civilian declaration for Korean reunification, which this year is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Last month, just before Easter, NCC and KCF announced their common prayer for South-North reconciliation and peaceful reunification.
