The 8th Assembly of the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) opened August 26 at the Songdo Convencia on Centrallo in Yeonsugu, Incheon. The participants engaged in discussions that went beyond Asia to include world peace. This Assembly, organized around the theme “Unity and Harmony in Asia” and continuing till the 29th, brings together more than 450 religious persons from 22 countries including China, Japan, Australia, India and Nepal.

President Emeritus Dr. Mir Marwat of Pakistan said in his keynote address, “To live beautifully, the spirit of mutual help is important…This comes not from unconcern, but from fundamental respect and concern for each other in harmony.” He went on, “Religious persons need to go beyond religion, ethnicity and nation, and play a harmonizing role.” He urged, “Let us strive harder so as to be wellsprings of salvation when the day of judgment comes.”

On the 27th, the Assembly will discuss various topics including “peace education and reconciliation,” “development and environment,” and “reunification of the Korean peninsula and peace in East Asia.” On the 28th a resolution reflecting these themes will be announced. Also to be discussed is a proposal for Korea to host the 10th WCRP Assembly, to be held in 2018.
