PCK Hapdong: “Lay aside greed and recover the faith of the martyrs”

Two Separate Services in Commemoration of 102nd Anniversary… A Time for Unity (1)

The Presbyterian Church in Korea - Hapdong (Moderator: Rev. An Myeong-hwan) held a worship service in commemoration of its 102nd anniversary on September 1, at its General Assembly building on Yeongdongdaero, Seoul, during which it reconfirmed the reformed faith tradition: “only by faith, grace, and the Bible.”

Approximately 250 members of the general assembly and heads of affiliated organizations and presbyteries attended the service, which proceeded in a solemn atmosphere after the showing of a video about Yeongsan Church, which had 55 martyrs during the Korean War.

Speaking at the service, Moderator An emphasized, “We should lay aside greed and recover the faith of the martyrs.”

PCK Hapdong began its history as the Joseon Presbyterian Church, coming from the same root as PCK Tonghap. Currently, the denomination comprises 11,593 churches in 143 presbyteries with 2,857,000 believers, 22,200 pastors and 21,120 elders.

PCK Tonghap: “Stand up against heretical groups’ outrageous lawsuits”

Two Separate Services in Commemoration of 102nd Anniversary… A Time for Unity (2)

The Presbyterian Church in Korea - Tonghap (Moderator: Rev. Kim Dong-yeop) held a commemorative worship service on its 102nd anniversary, at the Korea Church Centennial Building in Jongnogu, Seoul, on September 1. In his sermon, Moderator Kim strongly criticized heretical groups. He said, “The church should become united first of all to stand against these heretical groups with their outrageous lawsuits… If the church is divided and full of conflicts in front of its adversaries, they will take advantage of the situation to expand their horizon. Therefore we should get rid of unnecessary, meaningless conflicts and become one in truth.”

PCK Tonghap and PCK Hapdong originate from the same root, but have walked separate roads since 1959 due to conflicting opinions, mainly over whether or not to join the World Council Churches.
